Lucia’s Story: Finding Strength as a Single Mom of Six Children

This Mother’s Day, we honor the strength and resilience of mothers around the world—especially those who carry the weight of motherhood under difficult circumstances. Lucia, a mother of six from the indigenous Tzotzil community in Chiapas, Mexico, is one of those women. Her story is one of quiet perseverance, deep faith, and the life-changing power of hearing God’s Word in her heart language.

As a teenager, Lucia’s life was shaped by a decision she didn’t make. Her parents arranged her marriage to a man named Diego—a common practice among women in her indigenous Tzotzil community in Chiapas. Though she longed for more time before starting a family, Lucia became a wife while still a child herself.

Over the years, Lucia gave birth to six children and worked tirelessly to raise them. A few years ago, Diego left for the United States in search of work as a migrant laborer. At first, Lucia hoped his journey would bring some financial relief. But for over two years now, Diego hasn’t sent any support. Recently, Lucia learned that he is now living with another woman. Her husband abandoned her and their children. The burden of providing for her family has fallen entirely on Lucia’s shoulders.

To make ends meet, Lucia often travels more than an hour into the city just to earn enough to buy food for that day. Every peso counts. Every effort is for her children.

Recently, a Digital Bible Society distribution partner and his wife met Lucia. They listened to her story with compassion, praying with her for strength, comfort, and God’s provision. Lucia’s eyes filled with tears, overwhelmed with emotion as these strangers prayed for her in the name of Jesus. Lucia has followed Jesus for many years, but her journey has not been easy.

As someone from an oral culture, Lucia connects most deeply with spoken words—stories, songs, and Scripture spoken aloud.

When the couple placed a Mini Pearl Audio Bible Player in her hands, loaded with God’s Word in her native Tzotzil language, Lucia’s face lit up with gratitude. Now, as she listens to Scripture in the language of her heart, Lucia finds fresh hope and wisdom. God’s Word is guiding her as she raises her children—teaching them, and reminding her, that even in hardship, she is not alone.

PRAYER:
Dear Lord, we lift up Lucia—a mother of strength, love, and quiet perseverance. You see her daily struggles and the sacrifices she makes for her six children. Thank you for providing her with Your Word in Tzotzil, a source of comfort and hope. May she feel your presence in every moment and find strength in your promises. Bless her with peace, provision, and the joy of knowing she is not alone. Let her children grow strong in faith, guided by her example. Thank you for Lucia—and for all mothers walking faithfully with You. Amen.
